Happy Vintage Hunting....Vintage Glass Canister Jars

Recently, I've been on the hunt for old 1930s glass canisters! Sometimes they are called Hoosier Jars or Hoosier Canisters, as they were often used with the Hoosier cabinets in the kitchen. I have seen these decorative jars go for more money then I would care to part with at auctions over the years, but I've noticed lately that they've begun to come down in price. I snagged a few at auction this past Summer for good prices and have also seen them start popping up in local antique shops for good deals. I love these decorative glass containers and use them in my kitchen to hold all those pantry items that I want to keep safe after opening!

The mixer is a 1950's KitchenAid that I found at an auction 10 years ago. It still works like a charm and in my opinion looks way cooler than *(should be used here not "then" as I previously had...you should use the word "than" when comparing....I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused my readers!) an expensive new KitchenAid mixer because of the awesome glass mixing bowl! I'm also totally into Ball canning jars and really dig their twist on storage caps. The uses for Ball canning jars just seem endless and they're not just for canning anymore! Nothing beats a good solid glass jar for storing things.

Happy Vintage Hunting!

  1. I've been collecting the square ones since last year, none as nice as yours though! My cupboard has all of its dry goods stored in glass jars with chalkboard labels :)

  2. Wow! You really have some beauties there! I have a few vintage (don't know which year) glass jars and I keep my kids small toys in them. That way the toys look pretty on their shelves and I don't step on them with my bare feet!

    Thanks doll,

    1. Did someone call the anonymous grammar police on me???

Well, hello anonymous grammar police! I will work on refreshing my memory on the correct use of "then" and "than". I can't get it write....hehehe I mean right all the time can I?

      Now Dear Anonymous,
Thanks for reading, but I think you really need to take a xanax and relax a little. It's not like I'm getting paid to do this!

      Heart me....

  4. LOL! The grammar police are after you! Run!

I'm glad to hear they are coming down in price- I could use a few more. The only one I have is identical to the one you have there with the bread in it. I paid $3 for it at a thrift store and knew I'd never get a deal like that again!

    1. Hehehehe.....I'm envisioning Anonymous as a crusty old grammar teacher with a red pen in their hand just waiting to spring into action and stamp out poor grammar everywhere! OMG here I am offending my readers again. First bus drivers and now the grammar elite.

Good deal on your $3 jar find!

  5. I too have an addiction to Ball/Mason/Atlas jars! So good for so many applications. BTW, love your blog!

P.S. I am also addicted to exclamation marks! Please don't report me!

  6. Thanks for the tip on the plastic storage lids for the Ball jars! I use the jars for storage, but the metal canning lids drive me nuts sometimes. I will be visiting my local hardware store today...

  7. Hello, my name is Miss CherryBubbles and I'm a vintage jar-aholic. ;)

Love the hoosier jars you've got there, Mary D.! I am also glad to hear you've noticed prices dropping on these wonderful items - I need more, as well. It's so much nicer to measure out flour (or what have you) from an old-timey glass container than from a boring paper sack or cardboard box!

Your KitchenAid is swell too :) Vintage appliances rock!

  11. I love those jars, they're really common here at sales. I use them for storing everything - pasta, dry beans, flour, sugar... they're awesome! Also nice is that you can find modern versions by Anchor Hocking (same designs and still made in USA) at Target and sometimes even the dreaded Wal-Mart. I also use canning jars for everything - including to hold q-tips and cotton balls in my bathroom!
