Crazy Vintage Girl Errands

Today I have some errands to run. Like for instance, I need to stop over at the post office and mail out the lamp. When ever I go to the post office, the post office ladies swoon over me?? They like to look at what I'm wearing or what purse I might be carrying. It's very cute really and it doesn't bug me because I know they are not being mean or sarcastic. Most people in my little town, have seen me around so they know and accept my uniqueness. Like the garage guy where I take my car always calls me "retro girl". Since I like the guy and have known him for years, I don't get offended. The pet store guy calls me 40's girl. Once at the grocery store, I walked down an aisle to have some fella turn and look at me, break out into a smile and call me rockabilly girl. Okay then..... I said. hahaha I've had random people ask to get their picture taken with me like I'm the "Welcome to Lancaster County" girl or something. I guess they don't have cute girls wearing vintage where they come from???? I also HATE having strangers come into my house because they always want to talk about my style. Once I had a borough inspector in to check my water lines and he proceeded to "hang out" for an hour asking me all kinds of questions not related to the water lines. He some how missed all my "will you please leave" hints and at the end of all his questions, he asked me out?? Ummm, no thank you, that's very unprofessional! Who knew my own house could be a bus stop???

  1. My friend and I always get asked if we're in a play, or on our way to a costume party. At this point, its just amusing and confusing but I can see how it might be frustrating sometimes. I enjoy the attention, so long as its positive. I've always been a bit of a wallflower though so I don't mind if how I am happens to make me stand out now and again.

  2. To be honest, if I went in your house I don't think I'd ever leave! It looks so beautiful.

I really love the outfit your wearing- and cute postal box prop too :)

  3. Yeah, today the girls at the coffee shop asked me if I was a Derby girl. I felt bad telling them that I'm just an accountant. But at least the bulk of the people are saying nice things to you! I hate the ones who are mean!! You look adorable btw.

  4. That's crazy that the inspector guy was hanging around your house and asked you out! I've never had that experience, thank goodness. But I did win an award at work for most 'Outstanding Wardrobe', the coffee girls at my work call me 'Betty' now because I shop at a rockabilly store called Blame Betty and I have random people compliment me frequently, but mostly on days I wear hats. Your house really is fantastic though. If I happened to get a peak inside it I would be chatty too.

  5. When your home, inside and outside, is as entertaining as yours what do you expect?
You are lucky you do not have squatters
    hanging out in your backyard!

  8. Hi Amanda, My top is 1950's vintage...I found it the other year also with a white one at a vintage shop. Those blouses are the best and an essential part of my summer wardrobe!

  9. Touchofevil...HA you should see the white trash family unit that lives in the end rowhouse...they might as well be squatters. Thank goodness they finally took down their confederate flag. I guess they forgot they lived in PA!

  10. Rueby..the "are you in a play" has happened to me also when I've been out with a bunch of other rockabilly/vintage oriented people. We just say yes! hahaha

  11. In response to derisive statements it sometimes fun to respond with exaggerated laughter whether appropriate or not. Continue the laughter for longer than is comfortable and watch the offender squirm! It's all in the delivery.

  12. It happens to us guys, too. I hear the "Hey, look! It's Elvis." comments all the time. Sometimes they even do a lame impersonation. I've developed "Teflon skin" hahaha. I only react to the positive comments. I had one guy ask "Where'd you get that shirt? My dad used to wear shirts like that when I was little." My vintage shirt had obviously conjured up fond memories of his dad. I like stuff like that. Whenever someone has to service my furnace, they have to walk through my Kustom Kulture Diner & into my Tiki Lounge to get to it. I'm more amazed when they say nothing, like they see that stuff everyday! Try driving a white '59 Impala if you want attention from strangers! I also have to agree with everyone else, you look fantastic & that in itself is gonna garner you attention, some welcome, some just creepy. Enjoy the nice people & ignore the buffoons. Just keep being MaryDeluxe.

  17. I have to be honest, I'm coveting you and your house to the point I'm depressed now. Like, geez, what am I not doing that I can't afford what you've been able to earn for yourself?! If there's a secret, please let me know. I'm so depressed right now I can't really think clearly. I don't mean this as an affront... I just feel like I'm spinning my wheels not getting anywhere, then I look at your pad and wonder - gosh, what's wrong with me? Does any of this make sense? Did I wear out my welcome? Poop.

  18. Love the skirt!

I've had that conversation a few times... "No we're not in fancy dress, we look like this all the time..."

  19. Well, if I had a snoop around your house I too would spend ages talking about your style! And then I would try and steal bit of it hehe :)
No wonder the ladies coo over you, you have fab style!

  20. Must be something about the post office ladies, I always have the exact same experience there eventhough I live in Denmark.. By the way where have you been all my blog-life?! Can't believe I haven't found you 'till now! What a fabulous home!

  21. Yesterday, Southern Culture on the Skids.
    Today, Jackie Wilson.
Great choices in music as always!
I was listening to Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys but now I need to go dig up some Jackie Wilson!

  22. It is true, and honestly most people do not even have a concept of what we love, how we live and the things that we surround our days in. It is so interesting to them. I LOVE THE OUTFIT!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I understand it is frustrating, but it is also flattering, especially the guy who wanted to know so much about your house. Consider it a compliment to your outstanding style and taste!

  24. One guy (a street performer who had a microphone making him all the more louder) yelled out some reference to I Love Lucy. Now, I have no problem with that but...I look nothing like Lucille Ball. Haha.
A lot of ladies like touching my clothes, too. I guess vintage clothes have much nicer textures but it does make me a little uncomfortable.
It's mainly lovely, though, as you've said, because people are generally genuinely just interested/happy to see someone dress that way.
But I suppose people assume that, because someone's dressed so differently it automatically means they like a lot of attention? And like having people hang around their house, asking too many questions. ;] That's crazy!

  25. Darlene,

Please don't judge me. I started writing my blog for me. I share only certain things about my life on the internet. You see one side of me, not the whole complete me. You know nothing about my struggles...you just want to think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Maybe that isn't always true. I'm not even going to try to tell you I understand your struggles because I don't. I'm not going to try to tell you that things will get better and so on and so forth because depression is a hard thing to be in. It doesn't matter what I say to you, you have to be the one to decide your life for yourself. Why my life has turned out different then yours, I don't know? I don't have a secret?? If you want to let my "internet blog" that I write for fun, make you feel bad about your life, that's on you. Only you can control how you feel, I can't.
And just so you know...I'm really not interested in getting into blog drama with you and some of the other blog ladies out there ... If someone doesn't like reading my blog or has issues with me, that's fine...we all don't have to like each other or the things that we write on our blogs. To each their own.

  26. Well, you all can come over and ask me questions about my stuff but remember, I'll be frisking you all and checking your purses before you leave!

  27. At first, I did not understand your response to Darlene's comment (not that it is truly for me to understand) that is until I looked a little further. I sometimes feel the need to tell people that Life is too short and my bubble quite little and difficult to enter, very few are let in. I will listen to a person's troubles but I will not enter a drama or fill it with angst just because the cable went out. Life IS what you make of it and sometimes it will be difficult, but I would rather surround myself with happiness and good times than wallow in the muck that is negative.
Your blog is here for our entertainment. If you respond to us, that is cool. But to truly think that you know someone based on their blog is in err. One might follow because they feel that the other is somewhat of a kindred spirit or that they have entertaining revelations, big or small, but in the end why the reader is here and why the blogger is here are not necessarily the same reason.

  28. Touchofevil....I believe that people like Darlene who have issues in their life and are suffering with depression... will often go out of their way to attack people who are happy with themselves and their lives. It makes them feel good to try to knock a happy person down to their own miserable place. Then they often will try to rally the troops to talk trash about the happy person.

My response...I'm not interested in your negative drama...I've got a happy life to live so I'll get out of your way and you can go find somebody else to pick on!

If I felt Darlene was honestly asking for my help on how to be more successful in her vintage style, I would have been happy to give a wonderful compassionate response on keeping ones chin up and so on....but she really just wanted to come over and hate on me and it's very obvious from her response about me on her own blog.

I work really hard for everything I have, I try to make good decisions in regards to the choices I make in my life. I blog for fun. I don't share really personal things about my life on here. I try to entertain people who have a vintage interest. That is all. If you feel the need to be jealous of me because I have a cute vintage style house and I'm a happy person...well all I can say is you got bigger problems going on in your head then me!

    ReplyDelete
  29. After reading her blog, I felt a need to say something, hence the previous and extremely long response. Maybe it was a need for balance? I don't know, but I do agree with you. We all can have a happier vintage life in a happy vintage home if we just exhibit some patience, perseverance and an eye for the positive in life. This bus here does not stop for drama, nor does it allow for the actors involved to board.
    'nuff said!

  31. Being happy for no reason, is....vintage. Also, a person of vintage interest said "Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

So that is why I come here for the happy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love it! Being happy for no reason is vintage! I bet it doesn't cost much to get that kind of vintage either!! You just have to decide to be happy...happy is FREE!!!

Thanks for coming for the happy! :)

  33. I have one more thing to say and then I'll be done on this pointless blog drama...

I wasn't upset by the comment that Darlene made on my blog, what upset me was that when I finally got the moment to reply, I wanted to do so through a private email and not on the comment section. So I went over to her blog and that is when I discovered she started talking about me in her comments. Now I was a follower of her blog and had made comments on her posts before so she knew I read her blog and would see that she was talking about me. She deliberately started drama with me. So I unfollowed her because that kind of female catty behavior is extremely childish and don't want to get involved in it. I left her a comment on my blog instead. I didn't start any of this drama nor did I deserve it, I did nothing wrong other then post a picture of my vintage outfit??? I don't really have compassion for someone who plays games and tries to start drama with other people.

All I have to say to you Darlene is good luck, I hope things turn out well for you. Now please go away and leave me alone :)

  36. Oh -- and as for the content of your post, I'm the opposite of you. I *love* it when people get fascinated by my style and ask me questions. I, too, have had random people take my picture and when new people come into my flat they are always asking me all kinds of questions.

Today when I got my bra fitted the lady said "you remind me of Betty & Veronica." Then said my hair was "Jean Harlow." I was taken aback by that last comment -- I love it when people know who she is!

In my old hometown, though, lots of people laughed at me, called me "freak" or "halloween" (SO ORIGINAL!), asked me if I was going to the "Grease Convention" (harhar), and, my favourite, "Are you trying to be the 70s?" Living in a big city is much kinder to the weirdos ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Amy Jeanne...I don't mind as long as I'm in the mood for it!

Some people get it and others just don't and there's definitely a difference between a sincere question and one that's actually very backhanded and mean! :)

Yes, I could see how living in a city would make it easier on us vintage loving folk...
